Istria e Dalmatia

The Veneto Region promotes the recovery, preservation and enhancement of the historical, cultural and architectural heritage connected with the presence of the Republic of Venice in the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions.

Regional Law n. 39 of 25 September 2019 supports initiatives concerning the Venetian heritage located in Istria, Dalmatia and the Mediterranean region, while also fostering cooperation and dialogue with the communities and local institutions involved. The law also establishes a dedicated Committee with advisory responsibilities in the planning of regional initiatives.

Regional Law n. 39/2019 replaced the former Regional Law n. 15 of 7 April 1994, broadening the geographical scope of regional action from Istria and Dalmatia to the wider Mediterranean region.

Building on this framework, Regional Law n. 22 of 8 September 2025 further develops a specific area of intervention dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the Lions of Saint Mark. The law supports the preservation, restoration, study and cataloguing of these historic representations, which are emblematic of the historical and cultural legacy of the Republic of Venice, in the territories formerly under its rule.
